The Scottish Heritage Center's monthly lecture series will continue on January 23 (Thursday evening) at 7 p.m. with "A Night with John Charles McNeill."
At a time of year when many celebrate the birthday of Scotland's famed poet Robert Burns ("Auld Lang Syne," "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose" etc.) WE will celebrate the life and works of North Carolina's First Poet Laureate - Scotland County's own John Charles McNeill. Politician and Prize-Winning Poet John Charles McNeill | NC DNCR
This presentation will address the life and times of John Charles McNeill (1874-1907) as well as readings of several of his works which were composed in typical White Southern vernacular, as well as in African-American and Lumbee Native American dialects (quite sensitively I might add). His works "Sunburnt Boys," "Possum Time" and others give a lyrical and literary window into local life and culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
All are welcome - the event is FREE, come enjoy some fun local lore and culture!
